In an effort to expand the Apgar Foundation funded Columbia Core at Hostos initiative to other CUNY campuses, Hostos English professors Andrea Fabrizio and Gregory Marks were awarded a one-year, $31,000 planning grant from the Teagle Foundation for "Core Books: A CUNY-Wide Humanities Proposal."

Thanks to the professors' partnership with Columbia University, which was featured in The Wall Street journal earlier this year, the initiative brought classic literature into Hostos classrooms to help students improve their reading, writing and critical thinking skills. Funds will be applied toward professional development opportunities from August 2018 through March 2019 and include the participation of Columbia University faculty.
