Hostos Community College’s Media Design programs have been providing artistic and media savvy students with an extraordinary opportunity to explore graphic design, animation, audio recording, motion graphics, web design, video production, photography, and more.

Now, Hostos’ leading animation students within that program will have the opportunity to see their work shown alongside cutting edge animations from around the nation.

On April 17 and 18, the College will hold the “Dum-D Student Animation Festival,” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the College’s Black Box Theater (C-151). This event will showcase some of the best up-and-coming animators, including both Hostos students and alumni, as well as other artists from around the world. Animated short films will be screened both nights, followed by a Q&A with attending filmmakers. The festival will end with a brief award ceremony.

The event’s creator, Hostos Animation Professor and filmmaker Andy London, hopes it is the beginning of something truly special.
"It’s been a crazy ride making this festival happen, but I think it’s really worth it,” London said. “In the five years I’ve been here, I have never seen my students so energized. I hope we can keep this going."

Associate Professor Rees Shad, the coordinator of the Media Programs who also developed the curriculum, said the event will be an empowering experience for young animators.

“Professor London has involved our students in every aspect of the development and production of this festival, and this opportunity allows them to see just how many professional trajectories exist in the field,” Shad said. “From the storyboarding , to the sound design; from the actual building of animation equipment and sets, to the animations themselves; from the outreach for and review of submissions, to the poster art and web site, all of this is an enormous student motivator. I'm incredibly impressed by what everyone have put together.”
Space is limited, so please RSVP Andy London at alondon@hostos.cuny.edu prior to the event.
