In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture (HCAC) presents Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen (MHHK) for its seventh annual event on Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. in the Main Theater. Entitled “Volume 7: Celebrating Sisterhood,” this free Hip-Hop concert honors women in the arts through lyrics, song and dance. The event features performances from a variety of artists including: DJ Quiana Parks, Lah Tere, Caridad de la Luz “La Bruja”, Full Circle Soul Sistahs, Likwuid, Narubi Selah, NeNe Ali, Colored Girls Hustle, Pelham Academy Eagles, Not Enough Mics Collective, LC the Poet, D. Scott, Audible Chocolate, MC Beats, and Laurie Markiewicz.
Inaugurated in 2008 at the O. Henry Learning Center in Manhattan before moving to Hostos in 2009, MHHK is a multifaceted hip-hop event designed to showcase female artists, especially women of color. MHHK serves as a platform for social justice and community building, which educates and empowers all people of color on issues including HIV/AIDS and reproductive justice.
“International Women’s Month comes every year, but this year is all about initiating dialogue about the actions needed to create and maintain strong sisterhood,” said MHHK Co-founder Kathleen Adams. “Too often the accomplishments of women are not celebrated and women are portrayed in a negative light. It is time to rise up and celebrate seven years of edifying and uplifting our young and adult women through the power of the hip-hop culture.”
Admission to the concert is free, but tickets are required. Tickets must be picked up in person at the Hostos Center for the Arts Box Office, 450 Grand Concourse in the Bronx. Hours are Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and two hours prior to performance.
