Course Descriptions

Two Pre-College Math students in classroom

Pre-College Math

Math Start students study a mix of pre-algebra and algebra topics. Students will also study abstract mathematical functions and functions applied to real-world situations. Participants in this course do not simply memorize rules and formulas. Our goal is to help students develop thinking skills that will enable them to understand, discuss and write about mathematics. Understanding is maximized through in-depth study of core math concepts in an interactive, supportive learning environment.

College Readiness Seminar

All students in Math Start participate in a weekly College Seminar class to explore their academic identity and learn about college structures and campus resources. The course helps students align their career goals with educational requirements at Hostos and prepares them for academic achievement and graduation. Math Start advisors assist students with time management, navigating the Hostos campus, developing communication and self-advocacy skills, and academic planning.
