First Year Experience- FAQ

1. What is the First-Year Experience (FYE) Mentoring program? The First-Year Experience (FYE) mentoring program at Hostos is designed to help incoming students transition into college life. It provides resources, guidance, and opportunities for students to build a strong academic foundation, connect with peers, and succeed during their first year at college.

 2. Who can participate in the FYE Mentoring program? The FYE Mentoring program at Hostos is typically open to all first-year students, whether they are freshmen, transfer students, or students starting their college journey in the fall or spring semesters.
 
3. Is the FYE Mentoring program mandatory? Participation in the FYE Mentoring program at Hostos is optional. The program is a resource that is strongly encouraged for all incoming first-year students to ensure a smoother transition to college life.

 4. What types of activities are included in the FYE Menoring program? The FYE Mentoring program includes a variety of activities such as:
  • Orientation sessions and campus tours
  • Class registration assistance in conjunction with the Academic Advising and success teams
  • Social events and peer networking opportunities
  • Group study sessions with the Hostos Library and First Year Seminars
5. Will I be assigned a mentor through the FYE Mentoring program? The FYE Mentoring program assigns peer mentors/navigator to students to guide them through their first year, helping them navigate academic challenges and offering advice about college life.  

6. How does the FYE Mentoring program help with academic success? The FYE Mentoring program supports academic success by offering workshops on time management, study skills, and note-taking, as well as academic and personal advising to help you plan your course schedule. You'll also have access to tutoring services and academic resources that can help you stay on track.

7. How does the FYE Mentoring program help with social integration? The FYE Mentoring program fosters a sense of community by organizing social events and open houses, and events that allow students to meet their peers. The FYE Mentors also assist in informing students of events occurring around campus that can elevate their personal and academic experience at Hostos.    

8. How can I stay involved after my first year? While meant to support new students we welcome and assist any student who could benefit from mentoring and resource navigation. We will also make sure to keep our students aware of programs and leadership opportunities to keep you engaged, including involvement in student organizations, mentoring programs, or career development initiatives.
