What is the Hostos Student Leadership Academy?

The Hostos Student Leadership Academy is the home of the Hostos Student Ambassadors, the Student Orientation Services or S.O.S. Team and a place where Emerging Leaders or Scholarship Candidates an find an abundance of resources regarding some of the opportunities that are available to them on the Hostos Community College campus.

The Leadership Academy is also responsible for providing specialized workshops to all of its members on a weekly basis and to provide monthly forums to everyone on the college campus who might like to participate. The Leadership Academy in coordination with the Office of Student Life provides specially designed Scholarship Orientations to students several times throughout the course of the school year.

In addition the leadership Academy provides guidance and support to the Student Government Association, the Clubs and Organizations and their Leaders and to members of the general student population who have an interest in participating in a club, an organization or student government.

What is the Hostos Student Ambassador Program?

The Hostos Student Ambassador Program is a specially designed program for students who are high achieving and have a dedication to doing service for their community. Student Ambassadors represent the college at a number of events throughout the course of the year and speak out on a number of issues with regard to Hostos Community College, The City University of New York, the Bronx and New York City and State.

Hostos Student Ambassadors receive specialized training and workshops throughout their time as members of the program. The workshops are offered in general on every Friday afternoon from 3:30-5:30 and allow students to receive training in ethics, debate, etiquette, parliamentary procedure, governance, leadership skills, public speaking, voice and diction, mask making, time management, personal and professional skill enhancement and dynamic presentation skills amongst others.

A student ambassador also commits themselves to doing 40 hours of community service each semester and therefore gives back to their community, the college community and the society around them. A student ambassador will be asked to give support and guidance to students on campus and throughout CUNY, but will also work with nursing homes, shelters, soup kitchens, halfway houses and international relief organizations to fulfill their service requirements.

What is a Hostos Student Ambassador?

A Hostos Student Ambassador is a student representative of the Hostos Community and represents the highest code of honor there is. They live by a specific honor code (oath) and they are dedicated to achievement in education, community service and Hostos Community College.

How do I become a Student Ambassador?

In order to be considered for the Student Ambassador Program you must submit an application to the Student Leadership Office, which is in Room C-392. A candidate for the program should have a GPA of 3.25 or higher, be willing to commit to doing 40 hours of community service a semester, be enrolled for at least six credits each semester and commit to one full year of service.

In addition, candidates for the program should provide two letters of recommendation from faculty or staff of the college and have a resume.

Student Ambassadors are required to participate in mandatory Friday workshops to help them to improve and hone their leadership skills.

What is the S.O.S. Team?

The S.O.S. or Student Orientation Services team is a team of students who are brought together within the Student Leadership Academy to provide support and service to their fellow classmates and students on the Hostos campus and throughout the CUNY colleges.

Activities where you will see and be able to engage with members of the S.O.S. Team are at Orientations, Registration, Workshops, College Campus Tours and at any of the Leadership Forums offered throughout the school year.

How do I become a member of the S.O.S. Team?

In order to be considered for the S.O.S. Team Program you must submit an application to the Student Leadership Office, which is in Room C-392. A candidate for the program should have a GPA of 2.80 or higher, be willing to commit to doing 24 hours of community service a semester, be enrolled for at least six credits each semester and commit to one full year of service.

In addition, candidates for the program should provide two letters of recommendation from faculty or staff of the college and have a resume.

S.O.S. Team Members are offered the opportunity to participate in specialized Friday workshops with the Hostos Student Ambassadors to help them to improve and hone their leadership skills.

What is a Scholarship Orientation?

Scholarship Orientations are opportunities for students who are doing well in college to receive information regarding potential scholarships that might be available for them.

When do the scholarship orientations take place?

Twice a semester, the Office of Student Life and the Office of Student Leadership provide scholarship orientations to students who may be eligible for financial assistance.

How can I find out about when the next scholarship orientation will be?

There are several ways to find out when and where the next scholarship orientation will be held.

  • You can check out the Hostos Website.
  • You can stop by the Office of Student Life (C-330) or the Student Leadership Academy Office (C-392) and ask.
  • Or if you have a good GPA, you will be contacted by mail.

Can I still receive scholarship information if I miss a scholarship orientation?

You can find information regarding scholarships in the Student Leadership Academy Office (C-392) and you can pick that material up at any time that the office is open.
