ARTICULATION AGREEMENT
An agreement between a community college and a four-year college or university, which outlines how courses and/or programs will be transferred between the two institutions.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE
Degree earned at a community college, awarded for completion of 60-70 credits.

  • A.A. and A.S. Degrees- Transfer degrees that prepare students to transfer to four-year institutions. Candidates for the A.A. degree study the arts and sciences. Candidates for the A.S. degree follow programs similar to the A.A. degree but provide greater concentration in the areas of Mathematics or Natural Sciences.
  • A.A.S. Degree- Career degree programs, in which there is a concentration in the applied field.

BACHELOR DEGREE
Educational degree earned at a four-year institution, awarded at completion of 120-138 credits.

  • B.A. Degree- Bachelor of arts encompasses sciences, humanities and the arts and the social sciences. This degree prepares students for positions in profit, nonprofit and government organizations or for the graduate programs.
  • B.S. Degree- Bachelors of science provides training for a particular career and is considered a professional degree.
  • B.F.A. Degree- Bachelors of fine arts concentrates in art for highly qualified students.
  • B.B.A. Degree- Bachelors of Business Administration prepares students for careers in all phases of business.

CUNY
All of the units of the City University of New York, including Hostos Community College.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (GER)
The general educational requirements are a group of lower division courses that students in liberal arts must take. These courses will educate and introduce students to fundamental areas of knowledge in Mathematics; Natural Sciences; Social Sciences; American History; Western Civilization; Other World Civilizations; Humanities; The Arts; Foreign Language and Basic Communication.

GOOD STANDING
Students who meet the minimum requirements of the Student Progress Policy are considered to be students in good standing.

GPA (Grade Point Average)
For each credit hour, points are assigned based on the grade received.  A GPA is calculated by dividing the total value of grade by the total number of credits.

PEDAGOGY
The art or science of teaching; education; instructional methods.

PREREQUISITE
A requirement that must be met before a student may take a course.  Each course description indicates whether there is a prerequisite.

RECEIVING INSTITUTION
The institution to which you are transferring.

SENDING  INSTITUTION
The institution from which you are transferring.

SUNY
All of the units of the State University of New York.

SYLLABUS
A description of the main content, organization and expected outcome of a course, normally including the number the number of credits awarded hours of class time, how it’s evaluated, assignments and texts.

TRANSCRIPT
An official copy of the permanent record of every course taken and the resulting grades. Transcripts must be officially requested from the Registrar’s Office and there is a $7.00 fee for non-CUNY schools. The form is available in the Registrar’s Office.

TRANSFER
Consists of the granting of credit (transfer credit) toward a credential by one institution for programs or courses completed at another.

TRANSFER STUDENT
A student who attends one institution (sending institution) and then transfers their coursework to another (receiving institution).

UNOFFICIAL AUDIT
An overview of classes you have taken towards completing your degree.  It is unofficial, because the Registrar’s Office makes the official final determination as to whether you have completed your coursework and are graduating or not.
