On view February 19 – April 16, 2025
Roots and Rebirth showcases 22 contemporary Dominican women artists deeply connected to their history and traditions, yet forging a fresh vision of their culture through new ideas, influences, and expressions. Working across diverse mediums, they explore themes of memory, identity, and transformation, drawing inspiration from Dominican traditions, Afro-Caribbean spirituality, and the experiences of migration and diaspora.
These artists are redefining what it means to be a Dominican woman artist in the 21st century. Their work powerfully acknowledges the weight of history, while embracing artistic reinvention. Exploring the dynamic interplay between tradition and innovation, they demonstrate how roots can catalyze growth and creative expression. Through personal narratives and a global lens, they reinterpret cultural heritage, offering fresh insights into the multifaceted identities of Dominican women. Their art celebrates self-expression and the complexities of identity, envisioning future possibilities while highlighting the resilience needed to reshape established narratives. In doing so, they not only create compelling art but also expand the very definition of a Dominican woman artist.
