Following his inspiring Caribeando performance last month at Hostos Center, Juan Usera - a fourth-generation Bomba y Plena practitioner and artist - is offering an immersive Bomba dance Masterclass.
This is a great opportunity to learn about Puerto Rico’s oldest living musical and dance tradition, rooted in African heritage. All ages and abilities are welcome to explore the fundamental rhythms, steps, and call-and-response dynamics between dancer and drummer. You’ll discover how movement in Bomba embodies resistance, storytelling, and communal joy.

Juan Usera’s residency, performance and masterclass at Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture is part of the CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI), which receives major support from the Howard Gilman Foundation and Mertz Gilmore Foundation. Additional support is provided by the SHS Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund’s Charles E. Culpeper Arts & Culture program, and the Harkness Foundation for Dance. CDI is spearheaded by The Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College. www.cuny.edu/danceinitiative
