On Monday, January 21, the nation celebrates the life and legacy of a remarkable man: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His effect upon American life has been profound and long-lasting. The King Center neatly summarizes his achievement: “During the less than 13 years of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s leadership of the modern American Civil Rights Movement, from December, 1955 until April 4, 1968, African Americans achieved more genuine progress toward racial equality in America than the previous 350 years had produced.”
King’s use of non-violent civil disobedience as a means of combating racism and other evils inspires activists to this day. He was assassinated in 1968, but his dream of a nation whose citizens are not “judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character” will never die.
King warned of the dangers of bitterness and despair, and it is wise to remember this when one looks at the contemporary scene. Our active participation will always be required to help create the just and equitable world of King’s galvanizing dream. His stirring words provide us with the courage to face any and every challenge to the recognition of our shared humanity.
A remarkable man, indeed.
