Scotland Trip Hostos Students with president David Gomez

On behalf of all of the students, both present and past, who have made Eugenio María de Hostos Community College their home for higher learning and personal growth, thank you for making our 50th Anniversary Scholarship Benefit on April 19 such an amazing success.

Without your support, Hostos would not have survived a half-century’s test of time. In fact, because of your unwavering commitment to our mission, the institution’s future has never looked brighter. And with the College’s official 50th birthday on April 22, the evening proved to be the perfect celebration of everything that Hostos is about.

Thanks to you, we reached our goal for the needed funds to send 10 of our students to Scotland for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. I can tell you personally that Frank López, Krystal López, Omar González, Julián Jiménez, Anna Ríos, Thanna López Destiny Allen, Jairo Pena, and Thalia López are beyond excited about the incredible journey that awaits them.

We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to our Presenting Sponsor, Goya Foods, Inc., our Philanthropic Sponsor, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, our Diamond Sponsors, CITGO and Montefiore Medical Center, as well as all of our sponsors who made the event possible.

For me, as well as everyone in attendance, it was an incredible honor to recognize 10-time Grammy Award-winner Eddie Palmieri with the President’s Medal for Cultural Impact, and his performance was proof that it was well-earned. Saluting two champions of education like Philip A. Berry and Hostos alumna Dr. Mirkeya Capellán proved why the power of education knows no limits. We also couldn’t have asked for better co-hosts: Caridad de la Luz and Joe Torres filled the room with their dynamic energy all night long.

A special thank you to Rafael Toro of Goya Foods, Inc. for serving as the Chair of the Benefit Committee. His partnership is something the College truly treasures.

As a special gift, please enjoy this 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book, which includes the wisdom and words of the man the college was named after, Eugenio María de Hostos.

Also, please enjoy and share this new institutional video, "Opportunity Is What You Get," which salutes the transformative work Hostos does each day.

Thank you to all who witnessed this historic Benefit and for sharing in Hostos’ commitment to its students and the South Bronx.

We definitely got our birthday wish!
