The Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture presented the award-winning Hostos Repertory Theater Company’s production of Eric Coble’s one-act play “Swagger.” The Rep’s first theater piece since the pandemic called shelter in place streamed from November 19 through November 28, as the fall 2021 season premiere, over the Center’s YouTube and Venmo channels.
The “Swagger” artistic and creative team came together on November 23 for a post-show live streamed Q&A moderated by Hostos Rep and “Swagger” Director Professor Angel Morales. Cast members and Hostos students Raymond Flowers and Justine-Juliette Grindley, Danish Farooqui, and playwright Eric Coble discussed the plays themes, rehearsing and filming during a pandemic, and the importance of using theater as a conduit for larger conversations.
“Coble’s play addresses how our private and public lives are intertwined in the digital world. The three characters reflect life in such a real way, I had to bring this play to Hostos and knew the right cast would come along to being it to life. Justine, Raymond, and Dani, were incredible. I hope the Hostos Rep gets a chance to present Swagger at some theater festival soon so we can extend the performance life of this timely piece.”
“Swagger” is produced with by a special arrangement with the Dramatic Publishing company of Woodstock, Illinois and supported by Hostos Community College, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Howard Gilman Foundation, and the New York Council on the Arts.
