The Center for Bronx Nonprofits (CBNP) of the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at Hostos Community College has launched a one-of-a-kind searchable database, “
The Bronx Nonprofits Sector Report,” aimed at connecting people to the Bronx-based and Bronx-serving nonprofits that work tireless to positively impact the quality of life in the borough.
The database report is a realization of CBNP Director Eileen Newman, CBNP Coordinator Meredith Minogue and staff members Yolanda Colón and Josefa Jaime. The idea came to Newman soon after she assumed the role in 2012, but knew it ne
eded research and evaluation. After several years of assessing the Bronx nonprofits sector and presenting a strategic plan, Newman and her team went back to work on the database project and focused on making sense of the wide-ranging services a borough with 2,583 registered 501 (c)(3), has to offer.
“After reaching out to various people and organizations when we started the CBNP, I initially found is was incredibly difficult to get a handle on just how many nonprofits existed in the Bronx and what their area of expertise was,” Newman said. “Simply put, no such resource existed.”
Thanks to a $20,000 grant from The New York Community Trust, the CBNP was able to thrust the project forward. Josefa Jaime did the research and compiled the raw data. Yolanda Colón took the data and built a unique program platform that is now a robust and one-of-a-kind Bronx-based nonprofits organizations searchable database. Approximately 730 nonprofits are currently listed and will continue to grow. The engine allows anyone with a computer to search by sector, services, names, and includes mission statements, addresses, websites, and other related information.
