A mix of Hostos faculty and administrators have co-authored a book “Developing Educational Technology at an Urban Community College” that chronicles the College’s efforts to create and enhance educational technology at Hostos Community College.
The volume was authored by Carlos Guevara, Director of the Office of Educational Technology/Co-Director for the Center for Teaching and Learning; Kate Lyons, Reference and Information Technology Librarian; and Kate Wolfe, assistant professor from the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department. The book combines personal narratives, anecdotal evidence, and research-based findings. Guevara and company chronicle a small, urban community college’s efforts to develop and nurture a Community of Practice (CoP) that galvanizes the campus’ adoption of various best philosophies and best-practices and furthers organizational change and innovation. Ten years in the making, “Developing Education Technology” also includes contributions from Jacqueline DiSanto, associate professor and unit coordinator from the Education Department, as well as input from other faculty and EdTech staff.
Located in one of the most economically challenged congressional district in the United States, Hostos serves a large percentage of minority students in the South Bronx. The College has a unique history rooted in activism, advocacy, and community outreach, and has built a reputation for technology innovation. This book is a collection of writing from faculty and staff members whose decades of experience integrating technology into the classroom pre-dates many of the official initiatives now in place at CUNY.
