Hostos’ tree lighting ceremony ushered in the joyous, heartwarming holiday spirit.
The spirit of the holidays illuminated the C-building lobby as we celebrated Hostos’ Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The festivities featured warm welcoming remarks from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, who expressed her excitement to celebrate this joyous season and noted the symbolism behind the event. “Through the ages, ceremonial candles have symbolized the enduring nature of the spirit and play a vital role in Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa traditions,” she explained.
“Today we gather once again to celebrate a College tradition,” she continued. “In lighting the tree, we express our belief in this renewal of the soul, the victory of life over death, and the promise of a green and welcoming world.”
Hostos President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Senator Jose M. Serrano, and SGA President Dainma Martinez offered warm greetings
She also extended a warm welcome to a special guest, Senator Jose M. Serrano, who shared what an honor it was for him to partake in the annual celebration and expressed his gratitude to all in the Hostos community “for making this school more than a school.”
Dainma Martinez, SGA President, echoed both President Cocco De Filippis and Senator Serrano in her remarks.
“The tree we’re lighting tonight is more than just decoration,” she said. “It’s a symbol of hope, warmth and light that we can bring into each other’s lives. At our campus, we’re more than just a school — we are family. This tree is a joyous reflection of our shared values of resilience, diversity, and compassion. Just like every light on this tree contributes to its brilliance, each of us play a role in making this community strong and vibrant.”
Revelers, including little ones from the Hostos Children’s Center, enjoyed an afternoon of singing, dancing, and camaraderie, and a special visit from Santa.
The festivities continued with a holiday sing-along featuring the talented tots from the Hostos Children’s Center, who enjoyed a visit from a very special guest: Santa Claus!
All was warm and bright during the annual celebration.
As the tree was illuminated, so were the spirits and faces of revelers, who continued to enjoy the music, joy, and camaraderie of the season.
