Joel Rodriguez

We are proud to announce that one of Hostos’ most distinguished engineering professors, Dr. Yoel Rodríguez, has been awarded a William P. Kelly Research Fellowship for the 2018-2019 academic year. Formerly known as the Chancellor’s Research Fellowship, the prestigious program aims to advance the research, scholarship and creative work of CUNY’s distinguished community college faculty.

“I am honored, humbled and very grateful for this new opportunity,” Dr. Rodríguez said of the fellowship. “It will support the advancement of my computational biophysics research and help us to achieve our long-term goal directed towards the development of small-molecule chemical compounds that intervene in gene transcriptional regulation and cancer biology.”

Specifically, he shared, the fellowship will complement his investigation on YEATS domain proteins in collaboration with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, allowing him to devote more time to conduct research and engage undergraduate students in computational biophysics research. Dysfunction of YEATS domain proteins has been linked to human diseases, mainly cancer.

Professor Rodríguez previously received the Fulbright Award for 2016-17, which allowed him to conduct research related to the treatment of cardiovascular and heart disease in the Slovak Republic at the Institute of Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology in the Department of Biochemical Pharmacology.
