On Saturday, April 17, at 3 p.m., Hostos Community College’s Latin American Writers Institute (LAWI) will present “Hope in Com-Positions” as part of Carnegie Hall’s Voices of Hope Festival.
The online festival examines the artists’ resilience and explores the works they felt compelled to create despite — and often because of — appalling circumstances and human tragedy. Streamed performances will run the gamut from orchestral and chamber works to folk and jazz. Exhibitions, film screenings, and other events will also be a part of the festival, which runs April 16-30.
Hostos Professor Inmaculada Lara Bonilla spearheaded LAWI’s involvement in the festival.
Subtitled “Latina and Latin American Poets, Musicians, and Artists Converge,” the event will feature poets Josefina Báez (Dominican Republic/U.S.), Norma Cantú (Mexico/U.S.), and Margarita Drago (Argentina/U.S.) reading and discussing each other’s creative processes, as their poems in turn converse with the work of artists and musicians from Argentina, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the U.S.
Created in 1987, LAWI is devoted to promoting Latin American, Caribbean, Latina/o/x, and Ibero-American literature in the United States and across the Americas and the world.
