Nakeem Hamilton
Recent Hostos graduate and standout point guard Nakeem Hamilton will play for Division II Mercy College next year on a full basketball scholarship.

Hamilton graduated in Spring 2019 with an associate degree in liberal arts and will pursue a bachelor’s degree in business management. While he is thankful his play on the court opened the door for this opportunity, his dream off the court is to establish his own record company label and build his own brand.

“I have a lot of talented friends in music, and I would like to help them and build my own company, brand, create merchandising—the whole thing,” Hamilton said. “I am a community-oriented type of person, and everything I do, including basketball, is geared toward giving back.”

The 21-year-old Bronx native supports his community off campus by coaching a team of young adults. He also graduated with a 3.6 GPA, so he knows the value of taking his education seriously.

Hostos men’s basketball coach Marquee Poole is proud of the Caimans former captain, who he described as a natural leader.

“Nakeem has been an outstanding student-athlete. He worked extremely hard as a freshman, and was our team captain as a senior,” Poole said. “He was a two-time CUNYAC all-star and a first-team team NJCAA All-Region XV selection, because he prided himself on getting better and making his teammates better.”

While Hamilton is excited to start his next chapter at Mercy College, he will miss the unique communal culture at Hostos.

“The people at Hostos come from so many different cultures and have so many different ideas. It really is a special place. I am glad I met so many unique people and received the support to get me to this point.”
