Elected Officials Event Graphic

On Wednesday, March 31, Hostos marked the close of another incredible Women’s History Month by hosting a powerful discussion with six powerful elected women officials: Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, NYS Assemblymember Amanda Septimo, NYS Assemblywoman Nathalia Fernandez, NYS Assemblymember Karines Reyes, NYS Assemblymember Chantel Jackson, NYC Council Member Vanessa Gibson.

The Honorable Congresswoman Maloney set the tone with profound and time-tested advice sharing with the audience, “Take the chance, never take the advice of others that tell you, you can’t do something.” In her journey, Congresswoman Maloney was frequently the only woman in the room, and she learned early on that she had to trust herself to carry out her dreams.

“Be who you are and don’t let anyone take your shine,” said NY State Assembly member Reyes, who knows of the many challenges women face pursuing dreams.

NYC Council Member Gibson reiterated to the audience, “It’s all about stepping into your power.” Assembly member Chantel Jackson and NYS Assembly member Chantel Jackson echoed the words of their colleagues.
NYS Assembly member Amanda Septimo, the youngest of the elected officials, exemplified how, in her words, “taking the road less traveled might be hard, but it is worth it.”

Dean Ana I. García Reyes expressed what an honor and privilege it was to have six women who are active elected officials celebrate Women’s History Month at Hostos. “We are grateful these honorable women respect the journey of our student population, they served by example, and they showed our students they care about what they do,” she said.

In her remarks, Interim President Daisy Cocco De Filippis reflected on the growing number women elected officials and their impact on Hostos students and public education in New York. Guests also heard from Hostos Student Government Association (SGA) Senate Secretary.

“Celebrating the Socio-Political Achievements of Women Amplifying their Leadership Voices” was made possible with support from the Office of the President, the Office of Community Relations, and the Office of Governmental and External Affairs.

The message, loud and clear from all officials, was “Believe in yourself.”
