golf outing participants

The Eugenio María de Hostos Community College Foundation hosted its 16th Annual Scholarship Fund Golf Outing Classic on Thursday, October 6, 2022. After nearly a full week of rain, attendees were greeted by crystal blue skies and a beautiful autumn day at Pelham Bay & Split Rock Golf Courses in Pelham Bay Park. The well-attended affair raised nearly $122,000 to bolster scholarships and create opportunities for students at Hostos Community College.

After the tournament, Foundation Chairperson José Sánchez-Kinghorn welcomed guests for the evening’s program and Golf Outing Committee member Brooke Underwood of Schindler Elevator Corporation, U.S. and Diana Dolan of ABM Industries, Inc. presented awards to the winners of the golf challenges. The foursome representing EBS Facilities Services (Chris Arold, Kosi Remi, Billy Rogers and Mike Teel) clenched the overall first-place trophy with an impressive -9, followed by the runner-up foursome from MPG Parking (Sebastian Alberti, Rich Allen, Ramon Chavez and Doug Torpie). The Men’s Longest Drive Winner was Steve Buschbacher of Recycle Track Systems, and the Men’s Closest to the Pin went to Dan Chadwick of Aufgang Architects. The Women’s Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin awards went to Daniela Pinezic-Roth of Palladium Window Solutions. Congratulations to all winners!

After the awards, two students, Yavor Ivanov and Fatima Bah, were invited to share what receiving scholarships had done for their education. Civil Engineering student Fatima Bah expressed, “beyond the money, even just in the process of completing the application I learn so much about myself. When I think about my goals and my talents, it helps me understand what I want and what I deserve. Thank you all.”

President Cocco De Filippis took the stage to share just a few of the College’s exciting accomplishments of the past year. Hostos faculty and staff turned a routine re-accreditation process into a self-study report so thorough and well executed that the College has been asked to provide its model as a teaching template for other institutions. Though every academic department at Hostos has plenty of boast-worthy accomplishments, the Joint-Dual Degree in Engineering with City College has received accolades from two national publications, the Game Design program is quickly becoming a city-wide leader, and the Allied Health programs continue to produce exceptional, career-ready healthcare professionals. And, not to be forgotten, the College is a Top 10 Finalist for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Hostos is going into its next five-year strategic planning process ready to build on these successes. All of these endeavors are made possible by dedicated faculty, exceptional students, and of course, with the generous support of community partners.

To close out the program, gift cards and prizes from some of the area’s finest restaurants and attractions were raffled or auctioned to several lucky winners. One fortunate attendee even left with two Legends Suite tickets to the ALCS playoffs at Yankee Stadium.

The Foundation would like to express its profound gratitude to all those who attended and supported the event, especially the sponsors of this year’s Golf Outing Classic: Title Sponsors, ABM and MADDD Equities; Classic Sponsors, Montefiore Einstein and Schindler, U.S.; and our Lunch Sponsors, Ultimate Abstract of New York, BronxCare Health System, Newmark, Aetna and Oyate Group.
