The women’s team fought hard to win over Monroe-Bronx, delivering a thrilling performance from start to finish.

In a thrilling display of dominance and determination, the No. 4 nationally ranked Hostos Caimans Women’s Basketball Team has clinched the 2025 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 15/Northeast District Women's Basketball Championship with a statement victory over Monroe-Bronx! With this triumph, the Caimans secured their first Region 15 title since 2020 and, for the first time since 2022, punched their ticket back to the NJCAA National Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota. And all this comes on the heels of a stunning winning streak in which the women's team made history this year as the only team ever to secure eight consecutive titles in CUNY’s history.

“How fitting that, just as Women’s History Month gets underway, our Caiman Women’s team is out there making history with their exploits on the basketball court,” said Hostos President, Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D. “We couldn’t be prouder of their achievement, and their winning spirit. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams represent the best of Hostos with their determination and resilience. Bravi!”

The Caimans stormed through the competition, toppling Nassau in the semifinals. They faced a tough Monroe-Bronx squad in the championship game, but their winning mindset never wavered, winning 64 over 60. Game MVP was Hostos’ Daja White, NJCAA Region 15 and CUNY Player of the Year, who scored 20 points, six rebounds, and six steals. Sandra Asamoah showcased her versatility, contributing 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists, and Jozai Vazquez made a significant impact on both ends of the court, adding 8 points, ten rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

With this hard-fought win, the Caimans have once again proven that Hostos basketball is built on grit, determination, and an unshakable will to win.

“It’s been a real inspiration to watch the women’s team gel so quickly and build on the momentum of last year’s squad,” said Brent Wilson, Hostos Director of Athletics. “Both the Men's & Women's teams have had a fantastic year on the court and in the classroom, and I could not be prouder of all the coaches and players."

Next, Hostos awaits its seeding in the 2025 NJCAA National Tournament, with the official Selection Show set for Wednesday, February 5, at 1 p.m.

For their part, the Hostos men's basketball team fought with heart and resilience in their Region 15 semifinal matchup but fell short against a dominant Monroe-Bronx squad, ending their title run with a 100-82 loss. Despite the final score, the Caimans pushed the pace and battled until the final buzzer. Throughout the season, the team demonstrated remarkable perseverance, securing key victories and proving themselves formidable in NJCAA Region 15. Most definitely, this will ignite the Caimans’ competitive spirit and determination to set the stage for even greater strides in the seasons ahead.
