Assistant Professor Victoria Munoz

Victoria Muñoz, Assistant Professor of English at Hostos, is the author of the soon-to-be-published book, Spanish Romance in the Battle for Global Supremacy: Tudor and Stuart Black Legends. It is scheduled to be released in December as part of the “World Epic and Romance Series” of Anthem Press.Spanish Romance in the Battle for Global Supremacy

According to Dr. Muñoz, her book “explores how early colonial England rationalized its global conquests by presenting itself as the world's savior from the thrall of the Spanish Empire […] how these ideas were crafted in imitation of Spain's own religious justifications for conquest, and how such messages were further communicated through fictional romance books.”

Dr. Muñoz is pleased to acknowledge CUNY’s support for the book in the form of a PSC Grant, a CUNY Book Completion Award, and a writing mentorship through the Faculty Fellowship Publication Program. Of additional interest is the fact that three Hostos students – Mohamed Aden, Gerlin Ball, and Nelson Olmeda – were involved as student research assistants through the Title V Faculty-Student Research Initiative program.

Andrea Kouklanakis, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics & Oriental Studies at Hunter College, also contributed to the book by supplying several Latin translations.

An excerpt from the book was recently published by the Folger Shakespeare Library (Washington D.C.) on its Shakespeare & Beyond Blog: https://shakespeareandbeyond.folger.edu/2020/10/27/more-strange-than-true-finding-america-among-the-fairies/

Congratulations, Assistant Professor Muñoz, on this marvelous academic achievement!
