What to Know Before Coming: Campus Guidelines

Updated January 2023

In short:

  • Follow required procedures at building entrances (proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test)
  • Make sure you’re scheduled to be on campus or have an appointment.
  • Avoid spreading germs by practicing good hand and respiratory hygiene.
  • And remember: stay home if you’re sick.

Here’s how we’re asking you—staff, faculty, students, and visitors—to help protect each other's health on the Hostos campus.

Follow required procedures at building entrances.

For the Spring 2023 semester, all students must be fully vaccinated to come to campus for classes and activities, unless a religious or medical exemption has been approved. Students are also strongly encouraged to get a booster when they become eligible for one.

All full- and part-time faculty, non-teaching instructional staff, and ECPs are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 (two dose Pfizer or Moderna regimen, or 1 dose J&J) and their proof of vaccination uploaded in to CUNYfirst by May 27, 2022 unless a religious or medical exemption has been approved.

Effective February 1, 2023, CUNY will no longer require proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID test for visitors.

Effective March 7, 2022, CUNY students, faculty, staff, and visitors are not required to wear a mask in any campus setting.  Although no longer mandated, anyone who would like to continuing wearing a mask, is welcome to do so at any time, including individuals who are not vaccinated.  Masks are available and can be requested from Public Safety at the front desk of each Hostos building.

Make sure you’re scheduled to be on campus or have an appointment.

We’re using scheduled visits to the campus to limit how many people are in our buildings at any time.

If you’re a student, you’re all set if:
  • you’re headed to class
  • have an appointment to use a service or visit an office
  • you received an email to pick up or drop off a loaner device

You may need to show an email confirmation to staff when you arrive, but don’t need to contact Public Safety before visiting.

Want to use services or resources (like the Library, Open Computer Lab, or Financial Aid) but don’t have an appointment? Plan ahead: check with the area before visiting the campus! More areas are open, but most or all require you schedule a time to visit.

If you’re a staff or faculty member and scheduled to work or teach on campus on a routine basis, you’ll only need to email Public Safety on days you aren't expected on site.

If you’re not scheduled to work or teach on campus, email Public Safety at CampusVisit@hostos.cuny.edu two (2) or more days ahead of when you want to visit. Be sure to copy your supervisor or department chair on your request, and check that you received confirmation from Public Safety before traveling here.

Avoid spreading germs by practicing good hand and respiratory hygiene.

Avoid spreading germs by washing your hands, covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, and practicing other hand and respiratory hygiene habits.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, and lather for at least 20 seconds before rinsing and drying with a paper towel. If you can’t get to a sink, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol and allow your hands to air dry.

Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. If you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with the inside of your elbow or a tissue, and throw away used tissues right away. Used tissues, masks, and gloves go into the nearest trash can.

And remember: stay home if you’re sick.

It’s always been important, but now more than ever. Don’t come on campus if you have new or worsening symptoms of COVID-19. Contact Nurse Vasquez at reportCOVIDcases@hostos.cuny.edu if you are experiencing COVID symptoms or have tested positive.

If you’re on campus and begin to feel sick with these symptoms, stay where you are and call Public Safety at extension 6888. We have the tools to safely isolate anyone with a suspected infection wherever they are.
