Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)

As a result of growing national trends on college campuses involving issues of mental health and other issues which present an imminent threat to members of the college community, Hostos Community College of The City University of New York has created the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT). The BIT has been charged with upholding these policies and maintaining a healthy environment for the entire College community.

Mission
 
The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is a collaborative group with the mission of:
  • Coordinating a systematic response to members of the college community whose behavior is disruptive to themselves or the environment or members of the college community exhibiting threatening, homicidal and suicidal behaviors.
  • Supporting individual success via educational rather than punitive means.
  • Encouraging a culture of reporting.
Purpose
 
Hostos Community College of The City University of New York is concerned about the safety, health, and/or well-being of all members of the college community.  A number of university policies are in place to protect the well-being and safety of all members of the College/University.  The Behavioral Intervention Team will work using these policies to address conduct that is disruptive to the mission of the University, as well as any suicidal or self-injurious threat(s) or threatening behavior(s).
 
The primary purpose of the BIT is the implementation and dissimination of information regarding policies and procedures relating to disruptive and threatening behavior, its reporting, assessment, intervention, and resolution.
