This coming October, 4 – 7, the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture will present the 10th Biennial BomPlenazo – a celebration of Afro–Puerto Rican music and dance through concerts, workshops for adults and children, panel discussions, and more. BomPlenazo, the largest event of its kind anywhere, has brought together hundreds of bomba and plena artists from the island and around the diaspora, including New York.
The crisis in Puerto Rico post Hurricanes Irma and María was devastating; and, for this reason, this year we seek to bring as many artists from the island as possible -- to provide much-needed performance opportunities as well as the chance to connect with other artists during these difficult times. Over the years, BomPlenazo has featured artists from Loíza, Ponce, Mayagüez, San Juan, Santurce, among other communities. For the tenth biennial celebration, we would like to bring representative artists and groups from each of the provinces.
We want to make this 10th Biennial one of the best ever. We are grateful for the long-time support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs for this four-day event. Still, this year we need your generosity to ensure we can include as many Puerto Rican artists as possible. Our goal is to bring approximately 35 artists (representing about 5 different ensembles). All contributions received will go directly to providing performance fees for Puerto Rican artists, airfares, accommodations and per diems.
We suggest different levels of giving and accompanying benefits listed below for your consideration. However, donations of any amount are gratefully appreciated. You can donate by calling 718 518-4455 or online at hostoscenter.org/donate.
During this time of solidarity with Puerto Rico, please help us continue this important work in preserving and promoting Puerto Rican culture and heritage, and allow us to include as many Puerto Rican artists as possible for our 10th Biennial BomPlenazo.
Thank you for your consideration and support. We look forward to seeing you in October. Tickets are expected to
go on sale in mid-August.
