On January 25, three alumnae of Hostos Community College participated in a celebration of the life and work of Juan Pablo Duarte (1813-1877), the Dominican military leader, writer, activist, and politician who played a crucial role in founding the Dominican Republic.
The Zoom event, titled “
Juan Pablo Duarte y su Legado Inmortal,” featured Hostos graduates Gretcher Hernández (’11), Hephzibah Vicente (’11), and Fatima Hernández (’16), as well as Student Leadership Academy member Yanira Arias Hilario, who will graduate in 2022.
Various aspects of Duarte’s legacy were discussed. Hernández presented an overview of Duarte’s life; Vicente and Hilario read original poems dedicated to Duarte; and Hernández examined the implications of the man’s achievements.
Hostos Leadership Academy Coordinator added: “Current and former Hostos leaders and scholars Gretcher, Fatima, Yanira and Hephzibah could not pass on the opportunity to reflect on the life and legacy of a hero from the Dominican Republic, their home country. Each one, in their own way and in their own words reflected on Juan Pablo Duarte’s honorable work right in time for Dominican Heritage Month.”
