First-Year Mentor​ Job Description 

First-Year Mentors provide guidance and support to new students during the first year to ease their transition to college. First-Year Mentors are experienced students who help new students establish social connections, navigate academic requirements, identify effective study habits, and get access to valuable on campus resources. First-Year Mentors offer advice on college life and teach students how to use technology and learning platforms that are essential to their college experience.

• Connect with first-year students during enrollment and orientation events and answer questions and or concerns students may have about starting their first semester.
• Introduce new students to various aspects of student life including campus events of both academic and social nature and encourage participation in extra-curricular activities.
• Communicate with students via in-person, phone, and email.
• Provide a safe space for students to ask questions and provide strategies for navigating the first year, managing stress, and accessing campus resources. Serves as a role model for Hostos students by encouraging and modeling a successful balance of academic and college life.
• Provide personalized guidance tailored to the specific needs for the mentee • Attend and actively participate in mentoring training sessions and weekly meetings.
• Maintain frequent communication with FYE staff and mentors, including checking office e-mails, MS Teams notifications, and staff meeting assignments.
• ​Conduct and lead workshops of different topics ranging from: study skills, time management and academic tools.

• Completed at least 15 academic credits or more at Hostos.
• Concurrently maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Maintain a general knowledge of Hostos resources, support services and campus events
• Strong interpersonal and intrapersonal skills
• Solid understanding of: Hostos outlook email, CUNYFirst, Brightspace, Degree Works, Succeed@hostos
• Commitment to work 10 - 15 per week
• Ability to attend workshops, meetings, and training sessions
